Choosing a Jeweler

Most of the practices described below are not unique to the jewelry industry. They exist in every venue where people buy and sell merchandise from clothing to furniture to automobiles. The best defense is to find a jeweler you can trust.Choosing a JewelerThere are many knowledgeable, ethical jewelers that have made their reputation based on providing honest value, education and client service. If you are considering buying jewelry now or in the future, it is worth your time to establish a relationship with one of these jewelers.Consider the following points when researching a quality jeweler:

  • Look for a level of education within the business.
  • Are the diamonds and gemstones being verified and graded by a Graduate Gemologist of the Gemological Institute of America?
  • Does the sales staff undertake continuing education on product knowledge and changes within the industry?
  • If the business offers appraisals, is the appraiser trained and accredited through a major appraisal association?

Some of the major organizations offering continuing education in jewelry and appraising are the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), American Gem Society (AGS), American Society of Appraisers (ASA), International Society of Appraisers (ISA), Jewelers of America (JA).

  • An experienced jeweler with proper education can explain to you the subtle differences in the quality of manufacturing, diamond grading and proportions, gemstones and pearls that can result in tremendous differences in the final value of items that may appear similar at first glance. Can the jeweler knowledgeably answer your questions?
  • Affiliation with Professional Associations with a code of ethics such as the Better Business Bureau and the American Gem Society.
  • The ability to perform work such as repairs, custom design and diamond and gemstone grading on the premises. Can you speak directly to the jewelers, designers and appraisers?
  • Does the business have a microscope and know how to use it?
  • Does the business provide you with a high level of client service? Are you comfortable and confident with the personnel and the quality and style of the merchandise sold?
  • Reasonable warranties or return policies indicate a jeweler’s willingness to stand behind the jewelry that they sell.
  • Referrals – ask your friends or family.
